Building Scientists (and lawyers) became more common and helped Architects and Engineers solve the syndrome with “better” more complicated building enclosures utilizing dozens of specialized materials each with its own manufacture installation specifications and compatibility. Today’s building enclosures are expensive, some are even toxic and not constructible with current field standard of care. And more importantly, are extremely costly to control the quality of the dozens of different materials being installed in the field with some being incompatible with each other. In 1993 with the advent of the Green Building Council Certifications, building codes around the world started playing catchup incorporating higher standards for energy efficiency, indoor air quality, natural lighting, fire safety, more stringent structural requirements and sustainable products. In order to comply with these and future codes, quality control in the field is going to have to dramatically increase. The future building enclosure will become more expensive and time consuming. So out of necessity, I found a way to satisfy all these building envelope requirements with only three different materials and constructable by todays standard of care.
